“The best pass defense is a good pass rush” (football adage)

In American football, the best pass defense is said to be a good pass rush—not good pass protection. A good quarterback, if given enough time to operate, can beat good pass protection. The pass rush limits the quarterback’s time.

“A good rush is still the best pass defense” was cited in print in 1966. It’s not known if any particular person coined the football adage.

(Oklahoma State quarterback Bruce Scott.—ed.)

27 October 1968, Roselle (IL) Register, “Dragons Prepare…” by Chuck Willour, pg. B-4, col. 5:
“We’ll just have to try to get their quarterback — a good pass rush is the best pass defense,” (St. George head football coach Frank—ed.) Bauer added.
