History The first station on this frequency was WNNJ, later called WPAT-FM, Paterson, New Jersey, from 1948-50. Next to appear was Easy Listening WTFM on September 1, 1958, which was purchased by appliance retailer Friendly Frost in 1960. The station was sold to Doubleday and became Rock WAPP on 5/3/82. WAPP was sold to Emmis in 1986 and its call letters were changed to WQHT, Urban/Dance format, on 8/15/86. On 9/22/88, WQHT moved to 97.1, exchanging frequencies with Country WYNY, owned by Westwood One, which moved to this frequency. The station was sold to Evergreen Media and became WKTU on 2/12/96.
12 August 1996, New York Times, "How a Radio Station Turned the Beat Around" by Sreenath Sreenivasan, pg. D7:
Last February, 103.5 FM changed its call letters and its format, and soon after, its ranking and its bottom line. After transforming from WYNY (home of country music, ranking 21st in the market) to WKTU ("the beat of New York," the ads say), the station became No. 1 in New York, according to the spring ratings of the Arbitron Company. The new call letters once belonged to a New York disco station popular in the late 1970's and early 1980's.
