Texmati (rice)

“Texmati” is a trademarked name for a brand of rice that is an aromatic blend of American long-grain rice and basmati rice. Texmati originated in 1977 in Alvin, Texas. Many cookbook recipes specifically mention Texmati rice.

An AROMATIC RICE that’s a cross between American long-grain rice and BASMATI. It has more flavor and fragrance than its American parent and less than basmati. Texmati comes in both white and brown versions, with the brown having a nuttier nuance than the white. See also RICE.

Aromatic rices have definite aromas and flavours; the most noted cultivars are Thai fragrant rice, Basmati, Patna rice, and a hybrid cultivar from America sold under the trade name, Texmati. Both Basmati and Texmati have a mild popcorn-like aroma and flavour. In Indonesia there are also red and black cultivars.
