Texas Turkey (armadillo)

“Texas turkey” is a name sometimes used for an armadillo.

Known as “Texas turkey,” armadillo meat is roasted over Texas campfires and is considered a great delicacy by Indians in Mexico.

“It surfaced again as an item of interest during the Great Depression, when, of course, in Texas, as elsewhere, people were poor and they turned to the armadillo as a source of food. It became known as the Hoover Hog or the Texas Turkey.”
