Texas Scramble (golf)

Texas Scramble is a form of golf that allows players to form 4-person teams, with the best shot of a team used. There are other rules; it is not known who invented the game or why it’s named after Texas.

Definition: Texas Scramble is a competition format that is a basic scramble with a slight twist.
Scrambles involve 4-person teams playing four balls, but with each shot coming from the same spot (the best of the four drives is chosen and all four team members then hit from that spot, and so on).

The variation in a Texas Scramble is that at least four drives of each member of the team must be used during the course of the round: At least four drives hit by Player A, four by Player B, and so on. In a regular scramble, a great driver might have his tee ball used on every hole. A Texas Scramble eliminates that possibility and allows even the weakest driver on the team to get into the action.

A Texas scramble is where all the members of a team (usually three or four) ) drive from the tee. The shot that finishes in the best position (in the team’s own opinion) is chosen and each member plays again from the same spot and the process is repeated, including on the green, until the hole is completed. Only the chosen shot at each point is counted, so if four players hit four shots each, the score for the hole is still only four. (Handicaps are usually worked out as a percentage of the total of all the team’s handicaps added together. A fourball with a combined handicap of say 60 normally receives 10% i.e. 6 shots off the entire 18 holes). There are many variations of the theme though.
