Texas Kool-Aid or Texas Cool-Aid (cocktail & wine & Crown Royal nickname)

Kool-Aid is a popular artificially-flavored drink mix. What is a Texas Kool-Aid (also spelled “Texas Cool-Aid”)?

A Texas Kool-Aid cocktail consists of Creme de Noyaux, melon liqueur, vodka nad cranberry juice. This cocktail is on several websites, but does not seem to be especially popular.

Several Texas wineries claim to make “Texas Kool-Aid.” Lubbock’s Llano Estacado Winery sells wine that has been called ‘Texas Kool-Aid.” Cap*Rock Winery (located south of Lubbock) produces a Blush Royale that has been called “West Texas Kool-Aid.”

‘Texas Kool-Aid” also appears to be a nickname for Crown Royal (a blended Canadian whisky).

Invention and production
The building in Hastings, Nebraska where Kool-Aid was inventedKool-Aid was invented by Edwin Perkins and his wife Kitty in Hastings, Nebraska, USA. Its predecessor was a liquid concentrate called Fruit Smack. To reduce shipping costs, in 1927, Perkins discovered a way to remove the liquid from Fruit Smack, leaving only a powder. This powder was named Kool-Ade. A few years later, it was renamed ‘Kool-Aid’ due to a change in U.S. government regulations regarding the need for fruit juice in products using the term “Ade”. Perkins moved his production to Chicago in 1931 and Kool-Aid was sold to General Foods in 1953.
