A classic school joke is:
   
Teacher: Class, we will have only half a day of school this morning.
Class: Hooray!
Teacher: We will have the other half this afternoon.
 
The joke has been cited in print since at least 1937.

Senior girl in Geometry class: “We have only half a day of school tomorrow morning!”
Sophomore girl: “Honest! Why?”
Senior girl: “The other half’s in the afternoon.”
   
5 October 1958, Ogden (UT) Standard-Examiner,  “3 Ogden High Youths Pass Merits Exams” by Linda K. Neuber, pg 16B, col. 1:
There will be only half a day of school Friday morning. The other half will be in the afternoon.
