Wikipedia: Tariff
A tariff is a tax imposed by the government of a country or customs territory, or by a supranational union, on imports or exports of goods. Besides being a source of revenue, import duties can also be a form of regulation of foreign trade and policy that taxes foreign products to encourage or safeguard domestic industry. Protective tariffs are among the most widely used instruments of protectionism, along with import quotas and export quotas and other non-tariff barriers to trade.

Tariff-geddon taxes global markets

The fallout from the Trump’s threatened Friday tariff-geddon gathered pace overnight. Wall Street retreated sharply as expectations increased of a U.S.-China trade talk stalemate in a somewhat delayed reaction to Sunday’s social media bombshell. Unsurprisingly, U.S. Treasury yields moved lower, and the U.S. Dollar and Japanese Yen (JPY) ratcheted higher as investors rotated into safer harbours at the expense of emerging markets

The Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank, Jerome Powell, delivered his keynote address at the Jackson Hole Symposium on Friday apparently. You wouldn’t know it though, as his speech was swept away in a flash flood of tariff hikes by China and the United States, sharply escalating the trade war between the two from small scale engagements to a full-blown war.

On the plus side—though it won’t outweigh tariffgeddon—not the worst moment to be an open, mid-size economy looking for investors who want to put their money into a country that won’t be completely rabid for a good four years or so.

Genuinely curious what’s going to happen when a society that buys everything from Amazon, Walmart, and Temu realizes what a 60% tariff on Chinese goods looks like.

Canada should offer incentives to any European/Japanese companies looking to pick up all the cheap leftover auto capital after tariffgeddon.
