Super Bowl of Fashion (New York Fashion Week nickname)

Several large fashion events have been called the “Super Bowl of Fashion.” The Super Bowl is the championship game in the National Football League and is one of the most-watched television shows every year. The Academy Awards (“Oscars”) feature actors dressed in the latest fashions, and it was the first to be given the “Super Bowl” nickname. “In an age when the red carpet at the Oscars has become a sort of Super Bowl of fashion — and the designers of the dresses worn by actresses are mentioned on television everywhere” was cited in The New Yorker magazine on September 22, 2003.

New York Fashion Week—a now semi-annual event that began in 1943—has been dubbed the “Super Bowl of Fashion” since at least 2009. “Often touted as the ‘Super Bowl’ of Fashion, NYC was invaded by celebrities, models, fashion icons and yes, athletes, to celebrate Merecedes Benz Spring 2010 Fashion Week” was cited in September 2009. American actor and singer/songwriter Justin Timberlake called New York Fashion Week the “Super Bowl of fashion” in February 2010.

Full Figured Fashion Week is called the “Oscars of the Plus Industry.”

Justin Timberlake Debuts Fall William Rast Collection, Calls Fashion Week ‘The Super Bowl Of Fashion’
Posted 2/18/10 5:04 pm EST by Jocelyn Vena in Fashion & Style, Videos
Justin Timberlake knows that having his William Rast line show at Fashion Week is kind of a big deal. And when MTV News caught up with the Renaissance Man, he admitted that even though he and his business partner, Trace Ayala, had been designing their William Rast line for a few seasons now, it still unbelievable to be showing during Fashion Week.

“It’s the pinnacle [to show at fashion week],” Justin explained moments before the models hit the runway on Wednesday night at Cedar Lake in Manhattan. “It’s what you strive to be able to do. This is like the Super Bowl of fashion, so we’re happy to be on the field.”
