Big Taco (summary)
Los Angeles was briefly called “the Big Taco” by one California political writer in 1975, when both Los Angeles and New York City were competing for the 1976 Democratic National Convention. (New York won.) The term never caught on.
Recently, Mexico City had been called “the Big Taco.” The unofficial term is not an especially popular one, but it is used occasionally.

“The Big Apple?” No, let me talk to you about “the Big Taco!” If the energy of New York City can manage to lure you 3,000 miles across the country for a weekend of sightseeing, shopping, excellent food and partying, then Mexico City is a place that needs to be bumped to the top of your travel list.
3 August 1975, Oakland (CA) Tribune, “The Political Animal” by Joe Scott, pg. ?, col. 5:
BIG APPLE OR BIG TACO? Patrick Cunningham, the New York state Democratic chairman, thought it was pretty funny when we referred to Los Angeles as the Big Taco after the repeated suggestion that New York is the Big Apple.
24 August 1975, Oakland (CA) Tribune, “The Political Animal” by Joe Scott, pg. 16, col. 5:
BIG APPLE? The Democratic Site Selection Committee meets in Washington this coming Wednesday to award either New York (The Big Apple) or Los Angeles (The Big Taco) the party’s 1976 mid-summer convention.

April 2003, Business Mexico, “The Mormon Question” by Tom Parsons:
“Your church sent you down to the Big Taco speaking such poor Spanish?” That wasn’t very nice, I know. It was probably a reaction to them being so clean-cut and young and maybe the fact that they were down in Mexico for a fixed amount of time and would never have to struggle with the B.E.Q., and also partly due to pent-up frustration with Baxter and his trade secrets. I had an urge to tease them a bit, to make them uncomfortable, maybe scare them. But then I had an idea.
Jacob started in on how fast their church was growing and something about golden plates and an angel named Moroni.
“Say no more, boys,” I said. “You and your Moroni have convinced me. Just tell me where you Mormons gather down here in the Big Taco.”
And for a moment I was happier than I’d been in weeks thinking about how angry Baxter was going to be.
Tom Parsons is an entrepreneur from New York City, currently residing in Mexico City.

It’s been so long since I’ve updated it, so if anyone is even reading it, let me know.
I’m in Mexico now, close to Mexico City but not quite inside the Big Taco. (That’s the Mexican version of the Big Apple).

I am currently in Mexico City (a.k.a. Mexico Shity, a.k.a. The Big Taco) hanging out with my buddy Vince from High School. He teaches chemistry and “life lessons” to rich kids from the Big Taco.
