Stumptown (Portland nickname)
“Stumptown” (or “Stump-town”) is a Portland nickname, perhaps most popularly used since 1999 in the business name “Stumptown Coffee Roasters.” According to Oregon, end of the trail (1940), by the Federal Writers’ Project:
“Captain H. M. Knighton took up the site (St. Helens—ed.) as a donation land claim and in 1847 laid out the town as a competitor of the newly established Portland, which he contemptuously referred to as ‘Little Stump Town.’”
The “Stumptown” nickname referred to the many tree stumps that were in the town at that time (in the 1850s). The “Stumptown” name rarely appeared in the Oregonian newspaper and was probably popularized by the book, Early Portland: Stump-town triumphant; rival towns on the Willamette, 1831-1854 (1970), by Eugene E. Snyder.

Stumptown
Stumptown was coined in a period of phenomenal growth in Portland after 1847. The city was growing so rapidly that the stumps of trees cut down to make way for roads were left behind until manpower could be spared to remove them. In some areas the stumps remained for so long that locals whitewashed them to make them more visible. They also used them to cross the street without sinking into the mud. Captain John C. Ainsworth commented that there were “more stumps than trees” in Portland in the early 1850s.
29 June 1923, Morning Oregonian, “Polly and the Pioneers” by Mabel Goodwin Cleland, pg. 11, col. 3:
Some folks called it merely “the village,” and still others, “Stump-town”; anyway it was of little consequence. (That little stump-town is now our beautiful Portland.)
