‘Stros (Houston Astros baseball team nickname)

The Houston Astros baseball team is often called the “‘Stros” (or “‘stros”) for short. A popular cheer is simply “Go ‘Stros!” When the Boston Red Sox play the Houston Astros, the matchup is sometimes simply Sox-‘Stros.

Franchise history
Beginnings: The 1960s

Subsequent to the Giants and Dodgers leaving for California, an abortive attempt was made to start a third major league. It was to be called the Continental League. Though the league never got off the ground, it nonetheless established the demand for major league baseball in other markets.

On October 17, 1960, Judge Roy Hofheinz and the existing Continental League ownership group from Houston was awarded a franchise in the ten-team National League The team was to be named the Houston Colt .45s. In addition to the Houston Colt .45s, the New York Mets would also join the NL in 1962, a year after the 1961 expansion of the American League, which resulted in new AL teams in Los Angeles (Los Angeles Angels) and Washington, D.C. (a new Washington Senators franchise to replace the team that had left D.C. to become the Minnesota Twins the same year).

The “Colts” began play on April 10 1962, defeating the Chicago Cubs 11-2, and for the next three years, the team would play in Colt Stadium.

the astros are fast and hence have good team speed which makes for exciting baseball.  in addition, they have consistently had great pitching (even away from the dome) and that includes starters
(nolan who?) and relievers (dave smith, 4-1, 1.69 era). the fact that you don’t know any of these guys doesn’t take away from the fact that jose cruz has been one of the best players in the majors over the past ten years, (currently .346, second in the league) or that denny walling (pay attention, there will be a brief quiz later) is presently seventh in the league at .327.  as a team, the ‘stros
are second in the league in hitting.

In Houston, it’s a “Go ‘Stros Kind of Day” and it’s being celebrated all over town.

Restaurant owner Mike Kahn believes in the saying “Everything is bigger in Texas”.

With that phrase in mind the deli owner says the only way to give praise to the Houston Astros is to have giant sandwiches named after favorite players.
