Strollerville (Park Slope, Brooklyn)

Brooklyn’s Park Slope became known in the 1990s as a desirable place to raise a family. So many child strollers could be seen on the sidewalks that the term “stroller mafia” (also “stroller Nazis”) was applied since the early 2000s to the groups of stroller-pushers.

Park Slope has been nicknamed “Strollerville” since at least 2004.

Wikipedia: Park Slope
Park Slope is a neighborhood in northwest Brooklyn, New York City. Park Slope is roughly bounded by Prospect Park and Prospect Park West to the east, Fourth Avenue to the west, Flatbush Avenue to the north, and Prospect Expressway to the south. Generally, the section from Flatbush Avenue to Garfield Place (the “named streets”) is considered the “North Slope”, the section from 1st through 9th Streets is considered the “Center Slope”, and south of 10th Street, the “South Slope”. The neighborhood takes its name from its location on the western slope of neighboring Prospect Park. Fifth Avenue and Seventh Avenue are its primary commercial streets, while its east-west side streets are lined with brownstones and apartment buildings.

Park Slope features historic buildings, top-rated restaurants, bars, and shops, as well as proximity to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and the Central Library as well as the Park Slope branch of the Brooklyn Public Library system. The neighborhood had a population of about 62,200 as of the 2000 census, resulting in a population density of approximately 68,000/square mile, or approximately 26,000/square kilometer.

1-What’s your name, how old are you, where do you live and with whom?
Jay Brida, 33 and I live with my wife Jessica in Park Slope. I’ve never felt more like an easily pegged demographic: Part of a yuppie couple in Strollerville, waiting for the heath care to kick in to have a kid.

Best Park Slope Brunch????

I made the mistake of going to Dizzy’s once for brunch. In addition to it being Strollerville and chock full of screaming kids, it was hot, crowded, noisy, expensive and mediocre food.

Can you tell I don’t have Cable?
Jack came over the other night to hang out.

Oh yeah, that’s right I never told you guys, Jack found a place and moved out. He’s the luckiest boy ever. He has a 1200 sq ft. two-bedroom apartment in Park Slope, Brooklyn for $300 a month. Completely renovated!!! And not fake Park Slope at 3rd avenue and gunfire but right in the heart of strollerville at 7th Ave and Union street.

(WOMENSENEWS)—Some days, taking a walk through the neighborhood is too much to bear; pregnant women and happy couples toting infants on their backs lurk in every coffee shop and bookstore. Of course, my husband, Steven, and I knew what we were getting into when we decided to move to Park Slope, Brooklyn, a neighborhood so full of young families we started calling it Strollerville.

The grass is always colder
It’s the year 2005 and I live in Williamsburg, a hipster’s enclave in Brooklyn. I’m not so much a hipster as I am newly single. A divorcé. I needed to get 180 degrees from Park Slope, otherwise known as Strollerville, where I had previously lived.

The founders of the Babeland sex toy shops — conveniently located on Bergen Street in Strollerville (aka Park Slope) — are back this month with a stunning “How to” book, “Moregasm: Babeland’s Guide to Mind-Blowing Sex” (Avery), a graphically illustrated manual that seeks to be an “Our Bodies, Ourselves” for a sex-steeped, yet information-deprived, culture.

The Lone Bellow: Family Matters

The sky has cleared, and last night’s snow is blowing off trees and onto the sidewalks of Park Slope. It’s January, but a father is showing his son the Christmas toys that still sit in the window of an optometrist’s office. Older kids are already at school, but there are plenty of signs that this Brooklyn neighborhood is full of families, from the abundance of minivans parked along each street to the plastic toys in front of every third brownstone to enough parents and nannies pushing babies to give Park Slope the nickname “Strollerville.”
