Stinger (steak + chicken finger); Stinger Fries; Stinger Pizza; Stinger Taco

A “Stinger” sandwich is a hoagie or sub sandwich that contains chicken fingers and steak (like a Philly cheesesteak). It also often has lettuce, tomatoes, onions and hot sauce. The book Buffalo Everything:  A Guide to Eating in “The Nickel City” (2018) by Arthur Bovino states:

“And Jim’s SteakOut’s director of operations Guy Macon said they put the sandwich on the menu in 2008.”

Although the invention of the sandwich is credited to Jim’s Steakout restaurant in Buffalo, New York, in 2008, the Buffalo (NY) News had an earlier citation on October 9, 2005:

“My wife Teresa had a ‘stinger’ sub, the most expensive item on the menu at $7.95. It consisted of steak and chicken fingers (hence the st-inger) stuffed into a submarine roll.”

“Stinger Fries” contains chicken fingers and steak mixed with fries. “Who would be interested in Stinger Fries?  Just a thought” was posted on Twitter by Jim’s Steakout on July 14, 2014. “These are stinger fries. Steak + chicken fingers and hot sauce over fries” was posted on Twitter by Joe Lodur Perez on January 24, 2015. However, different fries use the same “stinger” name. “Stinger Fries $2.99 Fries Loaded with Jalapenos, onions, Chili, Cheese and Ketchup!  Yummy!” was posted on Twitter by Big Larry’s burgers on July 16, 2014.

“Stinger Pizza” contains chicken fingers and steak on a pizza. “Dinner: Stinger pizza- bleu cheese sauce, chicken fingers (hot), steak, onions, banana peppers, cheese” was posted on Twitter by G ❤  🇵🇸  🧕 on April 28, 2012. “I could really go for a stinger pizza. For my tweeps outside Buffalo, that is steak and chicken fingers on a pizza” was posted on Twitter by Chris Agne on December 16, 2012.

“Stinger Taco” contains chicken fingers and steak in a taco. “Im not hating, I just had a stinger taco and fries with some loganberry” was posted on Twitter by James McConnaghy on March 3, 2010. “Stinger tacos too ez (@ Johnny’s Pizzeria & Restaurant)” was posted on Twitter by Christian Wheeler on December 9, 2010. “Stinger tacos!!! My wife Teresa had a “stinger” sub, the most expensive item on the menu at $7.95. It consisted of steak and chicken fingers (hence the st-inger) stuffed into a submarine roll. The steak was thin and tender and the fingers thick and crunchy, topped with melted cheese, lettuce and tomato.

JM: The Stinger is for those who really enjoy a huge sandwich!

Eric: Yeah, it’s pretty big. It’s a combination of grilled steak topped with melted cheese and then we add chicken fingers, which are tossed in our hot sauce, and then we add lettuce, tomatoes and raw onion. The dressing is mayo, olive oil or bleu cheese.

Buffalo sandwich makes national list
By Elizabeth Carey – TV Reporter
Mar 3, 2011, 8:01am EST
A Buffalo-born sandwich is making national headlines. Jim’s Steakout has made a list of “America’s Best New Sandwiches, Part II” for its creation called “The Stinger.”

It’s referred to as “a basic steak sandwich with cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion - oh yeah, and some chicken fingers on top for good measure.” According to Jim’s menu, you can get them hot, medium or mild… your choice. The sandwich is also complete with melted cheese. Blue cheese will cost you extra. Leave it to Buffalonians to add chicken fingers and blue cheese to a steak sandwich!

You’re a Tasty One, Mr. Stinger: Sting, Stang, Stung
While Jim’s SteakOut and Colosso go back to the ‘80s and ‘60s, respectively, as far as anyone can tell, the stinger sub is actually a fairly recent phenomenon—we’re talking the past 15 years or so. (...) And Jim’s SteakOut’s director of operations Guy Macon said they put the sandwich on the menu in 2008.

9. Chicken Finger Subs
Served alone, chicken fingers are as American as apple pie. But pile them onto a sub sandwich? That may very well be a Buffalo thing. The hot bleu sub at Jim’s Steakout, with fingers smothered in hot sauce and covered in bleu cheese, is the perfect post-partying late night snack.
