Spoonula (spoon + spatula)

A “spoonula” (spoon + spatula) is one of several food implement portmanteaus, such as the “spork” (spoon + fork). A “spoonula” trademark filed in 1959 claimed a first use in 1956. Rubbermaid’s “spoonula” has been cited in print since at least 1990.

Food Network personality Rachael Ray has sold a signature Rachael Ray spoonula set.

25 April 1990, The Orange County Register “Every kitchen has a couple of items you just couldn’t do without” by Elaine Corn (McClatchy News Service), pg. 42, cols. 3-4:
The spoonula is my favorite kitchen implement. Rubbermaid’s spoonula comes in varying handle lengths and paddle sizes for $1.70, $2.70, $3.30.

17 November 1993, St. Albans (VT) Messenger, “in the Kitchen,” Shopping News, pg. 5, col. 2:
Take a look at Calphalon’s professional non-stick cookware, guaranteed for a lifetime. There are hundreds of handy tools, from a garlic peeler to the spoonula—a combination spoon and spatula.

16 February 2000, San Antonio (TX) Express-News, “Scraping by with unattractive utensils? You’re not alone” by Bonnie Walker:
‘Tis a pity about Rubbermaid’s dowdy version of the spoon/spatula hybrid, sometimes called a “spoonula.” The company recently said it would drop the squared-off implement from its lineup in March, because “it doesn’t look upscale enough.”

RUBBER SPATULAS You’ll need heat-resistant spatulas, or you’ll be eating pieces of them in your food. I paid nine bucks for a spoonula (a spoon-spatula combination) and have seen them for twelve bucks apiece

Spoonula
We’re not really sure where Rachael Ray’s obsession with portmanteaus comes from, but we really wish it would stop. This one comes from a combination of spoon and spatula, which she now even sells her own line of.
