South Hudson Institute of Technology (West Point nickname)

The United States Military Academy at West Point (about fifty miles north of New York City on the Hudson River) is an elite educational institution that was founded in 1802. Students who weren’t accepted into West Point (or who didn’t apply and went to other schools) nicknamed it the “South Hudson Institute of Technology”—with the acronym SHIT.

“Referred to by non-West Pointers as South Hudson Institute of Technology or SHIT” was cited in print in 1972.
