“Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy”

“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery” is a famous quotation credited to Winston Churchill (1874-1965). It is actually two different quotations pulled together, with some parts borrowed.

“Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy” was said by Churchill on May 28, 1948, in Perth, Scotland. “Socialism is the philosophy of failure” is not originally Churchill’s, but comes from the economist James Laurence Laughlin (1850-1933), who wrote “Socialism a Philosophy of Failure” for the May 1909 Scribner’s Magazine. “The gospel of envy, which is communism” was cited in the February 1893 Century Magazine

“Its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery” comes from another Churchill speech, given before the House of Commons on October 22, 1945:

“The inherent virtue of Socialism is the equal sharing of miseries.”

(“The Voice of Tennyson” by Henry Van Dyke.—ed.)
He does not teach the gospel of hate, which is nihilism, nor the gospel of envy, which is communism, nor the gospel of despair, which is pessimism. He teaches the old gospel of personal love and help, which is Christianity.

We are oppressed by a deadly fallacy. Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance and the gospel of envy. Unless we free our country while time remains from the perverse doctrines of Socialism, there can be no hope for recovery.
