Snowzilla (snow + Godzilla)

“Snowzilla” (snow + Godzilla) is the name of a snow monster—such as a snowman, a snow machine or a snowstorm. “Snowzilla” was the 1999 name of a snow sculpture, the 2004 name of a snow machine in Toronto, Ontario, and the 2005 name of snowman in Anchorage, Alaska.

“Snowzilla” has frequently been applied to snowstorms. In January 2016, the Capital Weather Gang of the Washington (DC) Post had a contest to name the 2016 winter storm. “Snowzilla” did not receive the most votes, but it was declared to be the winning name.

Wikipedia: January 2016 United States winter storm
In late January 2016, a winter storm prompted multiple states across the Mid-Atlantic United States to declare a state of emergency. Evolving from a shortwave trough, the system consolidated into a defined low-pressure area on January 21 over Texas. Regarded as a “potentially historic blizzard”, meteorologists indicated the storm could produce more than 2 ft (0.61 m) of snow across a wide swath of the Mid-Atlantic region and could “paralyze the Eastern third of the nation.”

On January 20–22, the governors of eleven states, and the mayor of Washington, D.C., declared a state of emergency in anticipation of significant snowfall and blizzard conditions. Approximately 85 million people are in the storm’s path, with 30 million under blizzard warnings. More than 8,800 flights have been cancelled in relation to the storm. Thousands of National Guardsmen were placed on standby and states deployed millions of gallons of brine and thousands of tons of road salt to lessen the storm’s effect on roadways. A travel ban was instituted for New York City on January 23. The storm has also been given various unofficial names, including “Jonas” and “Snowzilla”.

Wikipedia: Godzilla
Godzilla (ゴジラ Gojira?) (/ɡɒdˈzɪlə/; [ɡoꜜdʑiɽa]) is a giant monster originating from a series of tokusatsu films of the same name from Japan. It first appeared in Ishirō Honda’s 1954 film Godzilla. Since then, Godzilla has gone on to become a worldwide pop culture icon, appearing in numerous media including video games, novels, comic books, television shows, 28 films produced by Toho and two Hollywood films. The character is commonly alluded to by the title King of the Monsters, a phrase first used in Godzilla, King of the Monsters!, the Americanized version of Honda’s original 1954 film.

The city’s new fire-breathing behemoth will gobble up the salt-spiked snow that usually melts into and pollutes the Don River

You could call it Snowzilla—an $800,000 fire-breathing monster the size of a tractor-trailer.

The snowman in Billy Ray Powers’s yard is no ordinary snowman. It’s 16 feet tall and has been dubbed Snowzilla. “It’s solid ice. I put the arms in with my power drill,” Powers said of his creation, which took a month to build. Luckily, there is no shortage of snow where he lives—Anchorage, Alaska.

Giant snowman rises again in Alaska - mysteriously
By: Mary Pemberton, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A giant snowman named Snowzilla has mysteriously appeared again this year - despite the city’s cease-and-desist order.

It is the third year running that Snowzilla has appeared in Billy Powers’ yard in east Anchorage, to the delight of some and the chagrin of others. Powers is not taking credit. When questioned Tuesday afternoon, he insisted Snowzilla just somehow happened, again.

In 2005, Snowzilla rose nearly five metres. He had a corncob pipe and a carrot nose and two eyes made out of beer bottles. This year, Snowzilla is estimated to be 7.6 metres tall. He’s wearing a black stovepipe hat and scarf.

We hereby name this winter storm ‘Snowzilla’

By Angela Fritz January 22, 2016
Update!!
We’ve thought about it long and hard this morning and although Make Winter Great Again has the most votes — and is certainly hilarious — it doesn’t make for a good name, or a good hashtag. So we’re going with the runner up: #Snowzilla!

Snowzilla makes so much sense to us because of its perfect nod to this “Godzilla” El Nino. And quite frankly, this could be a Godzilla-sized winter storm.
