Shedies Awards (Manhattan’s oldest scaffolding)

Manhattan’s sidewalk sheds are numerous, and can stay up for a very long time. In February 2024, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine started the Shedies Awards. The “winner” (actually, a loser) is the longest-standing sidewalk shed.  In 2024, the oldest Manhattan sidewalk shed was 14 years old.

Manhattan’s streets are overshadowed by scaffolding, turning from temporary fixes into permanent eyesores. 🏗️ The oldest? A 14-year-old structure in Kips Bay! It’s time for change. We’re spotlighting these long-standing sheds with the 2024 Shedies Awards - a nudge for urgent reform. 🏆 Check our bio link for the full list of winners (or should we say, losers?).

Scaffolding, or sidewalk sheds, have become part of New York City’s personality. These structures are an essential tool that gives workers a stable platform to work on while keeping pedestrians safe from debris during construction. However, while they serve an important purpose while in use, their pervasiveness and tendency to linger – sometimes for over a decade – have made sidewalk sheds a nuisance. To call attention to this problem, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine’s office “honored” the city’s oldest sheds for “reaching preposterous ages” with cleverly named Shedies Awards!
