“Security is our middle name” (slogan at various government agencies)

Many home and business security companies advertise that “Security is our middle name.” Many federal agencies have security as a middle name, such as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the National Security Agency (NSA).

“Although ‘security is our middle name – really’ TSA” was cited in May 2007. Dan Lohrmann, a former NSA computer systems analyst, told New York magazine on June 14, 2003: “‘Security is our middle name’ was our motto.”

Although “security is our middle name – really” TSA is incredibly stupid and this is an example of the total incompetence of this unfortunately-not-imaginary agency, the AFGE spokesman is kind of stretching things here, and forgetting that most of those TSA goons that did this stupidity were probably AFGE members.

Why the Fed.Gov simply cannot develop drugs efficiently
(...)
As both my readers know, I’ve been working in Internet Security for a long time. The organizations that have always invested the most in security have been in one of three groups:

1.The Fed.Gov. As we used to say back at Three Letter Intelligence Agency, “Security is our Middle Name.” There really, really are spys out there, and they really, really want to get secret Defense Department stuff. Srlsy.

TSA Fails to Secure Its Own PDFs
I think I have mentioned before the danger of “redacting” PDF files by just drawing black boxes over the words you want to keep secret.  Many of you already know that doing this isn’t safe because people with advanced document-forensics skills, like cutting and pasting, can easily see what’s under the boxes.  Probably someone somewhere at the Homeland Security Department (“Security Is Our Middle Name”) is aware of this, but if so, he didn’t pass it on to the Transportation Security Administration (“Ours Too”).

What 9 Former NSA Employees Think About Privacy, Secrecy, and Edward Snowden
By Dan Amira
(...)
Dan Lohrmann, former NSA computer systems analyst, 1985–1991; contractor with top-secret clearance, 1991–1997:

NSA employees and contractors are given a rare privilege and unique trust by our nation. Just as everyone in a hospital operating room is trained to know their role to save lives, everyone at NSA is taught the importance of their part in the vital mission.

“Security is our middle name” was our motto. Genuine integrity was paramount.

New York Magazine ran a piece describing, “What 9 Former NSA Employees Think About Privacy, Secrecy, and Edward Snowden.” I was asked to contribute 100 words on the topic, and here is what I wrote:
