Saudi America (oil-producing areas of the United States)
The name “Saudi America” (Saudi Arabia + United States of America) refers to a United States that is energy independent (and possibly even an energy exporter). Texas had oil in the 20th century and North Dakota began an oil boom in 2008, thanks to horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing technologies.
The news story “‘Saudi America’ heads for energy independence” by Brian Milner in The Globe and Mail (Toronto, Canada) on March 18, 2012, popularized the name in the media. Philip Verleger Jr., an economist and president of Colorado-based research firm PKVerleger LLC, came up with the name:
The U.S. really behaves like three different countries when it comes to oil – the East Coast, West Coast and the vast middle, which he calls ‘Saudi America’, stretching from the Appalachians in the east to Utah in the west. “‘Saudi America’ is moving very quickly to energy independence,” says Mr. Verleger, president of Colorado-based research firm PKVerleger LLC.

“What we’ve had is a tight [oil]market,” says economist Philip Verleger Jr., who has devoted much of his long career to digging deep below the surface of oil and other commodity markets. “I think it is in the process of unwinding.”

Saudi America
The U.S. will be the world’s leading energy producer, if we allow it.
Sometimes the revolution politicians seek isn’t the one they get. Consider the irony—and the opportunity—in Monday’s report that the U.S. is likely to surpass Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest oil producer as early as 2020.
In its annual world energy outlook, the Paris-based International Energy Agency (IEA) says the global energy map “is being redrawn by the resurgence in oil and gas production in the United States.”

9 Charts That Show Why People Have Begun To Whisper About ‘Saudi America’

Earlier today we reported on the BofA/ML analyst who thinks it’s possible that in the next 24 months, prices of West Texas Intermediate crude (the benchmark for US-borne oil) could fall to $50/barrel.
The basic gist: Thanks to oil from shale, production is growing like bonkers, and it will overwhelm the infrastructure, leading to huge gluts and collapsing prices.
There’s a new phrase being bandied about and that’s “Saudi America.”
We first noticed it earlier this month when Morgan Stanley’s Evan Calio used it to title a note. The economist Mark Perry used it on Twitter earlier this week, as well.

The Myth of “Saudi America”
Straight talk from geologists about our new era of oil abundance.

So what’s wrong with this story? Maugeri’s problems begin but don’t end with an arithmetic blunder so dumb (he compounded a percentage decline incorrectly) it would make even Steve Levitt blush. The geeky geological stuff discussed at the AGU session is more interesting and ultimately more damning. The geological considerations expose a number of common threads of faulty reasoning that pervade the current crop of starry-eyed projections of endless oil abundance.

We’ve been reporting on ‘Saudi America’ for awhile as improvements in drilling and exploration have allowed the U.S. and Canada to exploit vast reserves of oil and gas contained in shale rock.

Shale revolution: ‘Saudi America’ was the world’s No. 1 petroleum producer in April for the 6th straight month
Mark J. Perry | August 1, 2013, 9:48 am
The Energy Information Administration (EIA) released new data this week on international energy production for the month of April. For the sixth straight month starting in November last year, total petroleum production (crude oil and other petroleum products like natural gas plant liquids, leased condensate, and refined petroleum products) in “Saudi America” during the month of April (12.08 million barrels per day) exceeded petroleum production in Saudi Arabia (11.53 million barrels per day).
