Saratoga: “Health, History, Horses” (slogan)

“WELCOME TO SARATOGA SPRINGS—HEALTH HISTORY HORSES” is what greets people on several signs in Saratoga Springs, New York. “Health” refers to the springs and spas of the city. “History” refers to many things, such as the Battles of Saratoga in the American Revolutionary War (September 19 and October 7, 1777). “Horses” refers to Saratoga Race Course, opened in 1863.

“Albany—Saratoga Springs, the city of history, health and horses, is slicked up for its great month” was printed in the Ogdensburg (NY) Advance-News on August 1, 1954. “Saratoga has long been famous for health, history, and horses” was printed in Town & Country (New York, NY) in July 1957. “APPROACHING Saratoga Springs, N. Y., on any major highway, one can’t miss seeing huge billboard signs advertising the famous Spa with these three words: Health, History, Horses” was printed in the Verona-Cedar Grove (NJ) Times on August 24, 1961.

“Health, Horses, History” is another popular order of the saying. “Saratoga Springs (AP)—Saratoga, noted for health, horses and history—but not necessarily in that order—  opens its 89th race meeting today with hopes high for a successful four-week run” was printed in Newsday (Long Island, NY) and other newspapers on August 2, 1954.
