Romoing

Tony Romo became the starting quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys during the 2006 season. He did not experience playoff success, and “Romoing” became a term for choking or failure. “Aside from Tony Romo Romoing his Cowboys into another fourth-quarter collapse” was cited in October 2011. The website romoing.com celebrated Tony Romo’s failures, and the Urban Dictionary entry on October 7, 2013 defined “romoing” as “Doing something really well, only to mess it up at the end.”

On January 4, 2015, Tony Romo led the Cowboys to a come-from-behind 24-20 wild card playoff victory over the Detroit Lions. He threw the winning fourth quarter touchdown pass to wide receiver Terrance Williams. Romo was prone with his face on the ground, but he managed to see the score and raised his arms in celebration. “The face down TD celebration might be the new #Romoing.. if Dallas hangs on here” was posted on Twitter during the game. “Tony Romo redefines #Romoing in Cowboys’ win over Lions” was an article posted on FOX Sports Southwest immediately after the game.

“Romoing” is similar to planking, Dufnering, Tebowing and BERCOing. People have recreated the pose, taken a photo of it, and then posted the photo on social media.

Wikipedia: Tony Romo
Antonio Ramiro “Tony” Romo (born April 21, 1980) is an American football quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football for Eastern Illinois University, an NCAA Division I-AA school. At Eastern Illinois, Romo won the Walter Payton Award in 2002, and led the Panthers football team to an Ohio Valley Conference championship in 2001.

Not selected in the 2003 NFL Draft, Romo signed as a free agent with the Dallas Cowboys. After two seasons as a holder, Romo replaced the Cowboys’ previous starting quarterback Drew Bledsoe during a game against the New York Giants in the 2006 season. Romo was a Pro Bowl selection for the 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2014 seasons, all seasons in which the Dallas Cowboys made the playoffs. He has also broken Dallas Cowboys team records including most games with at least 300 passing yards and games with three or more touchdown passes.

The Bad Quarterback League: Sanchez Steps Up (For Jets BQBL Owners)
OCTOBER 4, 2011
by DAVID JACOBY
As Sunday’s afternoon games were winding down, it looked as if we were headed toward a relatively quiet week in the BQBL. Aside from Tony Romo Romoing his Cowboys into another fourth-quarter collapse, there just wasn’t any one QB who stood out below the rest — until Mark Sanchez took the field against the Baltimore Ravens.

The next big thing since Tebowing! It’s called Romoing! This video explains it all! Features a song by Ne-Yo titled Let Me Love You. We do not own the right to the song in this video, Tebowing, or anything affliated with the NFL Dallas Cowboys/ Tony Romo.

Man, you threw 5 TDs, but then you just HAD to go and start Romoing. I was so close with that girl, but I started Romoing and it all went south.

Tony Romo redefines #Romoing in Cowboys’ win over Lions
JAN 04, 2015 8:01p ET
During a 2006 wild-card game against the Seahawks, Tony Romo bobbled a snap that proved costly during the Cowboys’ loss. An Internet meme was born.

That image has stayed with Cowboy fans for nine years. Fortunately for them, a new meme was born during Dallas’ 24-20 win over Detroit.

Late in the fourth quarter, Tony Romo completed a pass that capped the come-from-behind win for Dallas. After his touchdown throw, Romo celebrated while he was still on the ground.

Ladies and gentlemen, the new #Romoing.

ARLINGTON (CBSDFW.COM) – It’s a familiar narrative. Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys are chokers who fold on the biggest stage.

It’s a narrative that’s run its course.

However, a new trend is emerging following Sunday’s dramatic game-winning touchdown pass.

It’s called “Romoing”.

CowBuzz: “Romoing” Takes Over Valley Ranch & AT&T Stadium
There’s a new craze sweeping Cowboys Nation this week, “Romoing”.  If you haven’t seen the photo from Sunday’s game yet, here it is…

It happened right after Tony Romo’s pass to Terence Williams in the 4th quarter.
It’s taken on a life of its own with Cowboys fans in the same vein as “Planking” or “Dufnering”.  We noticed a trend Monday across social media, here are a few tweets from the last couple of days.

BERCOing or Romoing? Mike Bercovici and Tony Romo share celebration
Andrew Joseph, azcentral sports 1:02 p.m. MST January 7, 2015
They say imitation is the best form of flattery, and Arizona State quarterback Mike Bercovici knows that.

After Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo connected with Terrance Williams for the game-winning touchdown against the Lions, Romo stayed on the ground in jubilation. He had his face down, almost in disbelief.

Well, Bercovici thought the celebration looked awfully familiar.

The ASU quarterback, too, found himself face-down on the turf in awe after he completed a game-winning Hail Mary to Jaelen Strong against USC. The “Jael Mary” changed ASU’s season for the better, and the images of Bercovici down on the turf led to the #BERCOing hashtag on Twitter.

‘Romoing’ trend is news to Romo

Asked about it Wednesday after practice, Romo said he wasn’t aware of Romoing.

“I am not,” Romo said, grinning. “That’s interesting.”

Because he ended face-down on the field, Romo was asked if he saw Williams make the touchdown catch or if he was reacting to the crowd erupting.

“A little of both,” Romo said. “I think I saw it, and then the crowd obviously made it official. You’re just excited at that moment.”

Romoing is the latest in a long line of trending camera poses on Twitter, starting with planking - stretching out rigidly like a plank in unusual places.
