“Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July; Democrats believe every day is April 15th”
U.S. President Ronald Regan (1911-2004) said in September 1984, at Union-Endicaott High School (Endicott, NY):
“The main difference between ourselves and the other side is: We see an America where every day is the Fourth of July. They see an American where every day is April 15th.”
The quotation is often given as, “Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July; Democrats believe every day is April 15th.” Reagan believed that Republicans see every day as Independence Day (a celebration of liberty) while Democrats see every day as tax day (where the government takes one’s property).

BRIEFING; ‘There You Go Again’

Viewers of the Presidential campaign debate Sunday evening recognized rapidly that Walter F. Mondale had come prepared for President Reagan to invoke his ‘‘there you go again’’ line.
(...)
As Robert C. Beckel, the Mondale campaign manager, tells it, his candidate was also ready to top another likely Reagan punch line. In recent campaign speeches, the President has gleefully said that this was the difference between the two political parties: ‘‘Republicans believe every day is the Fourth of July, but Democrats believe every day is April 15.’’
If Mr. Reagan had repeated that comparison in the debate, Mr. Mondale was prepared to respond: ‘‘Mr. President, I know some of your supporters take April 15 as a holiday, but a lot of other Americans have to work, even on July 4.’‘
