Recessipe (recession recipe)

The economic recession of 2008-2009 caused many people to choose simpler, less expensive meals. The word “recessipe” (recession recipe) was popularized in February and March 2009.

A blog on February 5, 2009 and another blog on February 15, 2009, both used the title “Recessipes.” On February 6, 2009, CNN Living did a segment titled “Recess-ipes: 10 meals for $10 each.” The Food Network used the word “recessipes” on March 18, 2009.

Restaurants (such as the hot dog restaurant Gray’s Papaya in New York City) have long offered a dining-out equivalent to the “recessipe” in the “recession special.”

Healthy Recipes to Keep Both Your Stomach and Wallet Full

March 25, 2009
Times are tough, and many of us are rediscovering the benefits of a home-cooked meal. The folks at the Food Network discovered that recently more people are searching the network’s Web site looking for recipes that are easy on the waistline, as well as the wallet. In response, the Food Network has created what it is calling “recessipes”—meals that will leave both your stomach and bank accounts full.
