“Real Targét has to be from the Targét region of France, otherwise, it’s just sparkling Walmart”

“Champagne” is sometimes used as a generic term for sparkling wine, but legally, it must come from the Champagne wine region of France. Target stores are often joked as “Targét” (tar-ZHAY), and the jocular meme has been used.

“Interestingly, you should only call it ‘Target’ if it’s from the Target region of France. Otherwise it’s ‘Sparkling K-Mart’” was posted on Twitter by Sean M Elliott on May 28, 2019. “‘It’s only Target if it’s from the Tarjere region of France, otherwise it’s just sparkling Walmart.’ #ThingsMyHusbandSays” was posted on Twitter  by Denise Beucler 🌻 on April 27, 2021. “Quote of the moment: ‘Real Target has to be from the Target region of France, otherwise, it’s just sparkling Wal-Mart’” was posted on Twitter by Mickey D on April 8, 2022.

Similar jokes using this meme include “It’s not a bailout unless it comes from the Baile region of France. In this case it’s a sparkling government intervention,” “It’s not a recession unless it’s from the Recession region of France, otherwise it’s just sparkling misery,” “It’s only ‘Cancel Culture’ if it comes from the Cancella region of France. Otherwise it’s just Sparkling Consequences,” “It’s only moaning if it’s from the Moan region of France. Otherwise it’s just sparkling whine,” “It’s only physics if it’s from the Physique region of France. Otherwise it’s just sparkling math,” “It’s only poetry if it’s from the Poet region of France. Otherwise it’s just sparkling whine,” “It’s only Quarantine if it’s in the Quarante province of France. Otherwise it’s just Sparkling Isolation,” “It’s only sour grapes if it comes from the Sourgrape region of France. Otherwise it’s just sparkling whine,” “It’s only turkey if it’s from the farm region of Turkey. Otherwise, it’s sparkling chicken” and “Omicron must come from the Omicrônne region of France, otherwise it’s just sparkling covid.”

Wikipedia: Target Corporation
Target Corporation (doing business as Target and stylized as target) is an American big box department store chain headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is the eighth largest retailer in the United States, and a component of the S&P 500 Index. Target established itself as the discount division of the Dayton’s Company of Minneapolis in 1962. It began expanding the store nationwide in the 1980s (as part of the Dayton-Hudson Corporation), and introduced new store formats under the Target brand in the 1990s.

Targét
Some people jokingly give Target the pseudo-French pronunciation /tɑːrˈʒeɪ/ tar-ZHAY, as though it were an upscale boutique. Though this practice is often attributed to Oprah Winfrey’s usage on her television show, it is first attested in 1962, the year the first Target store opened. Target once sold a line of shoes called “Miss Targé;” this was reinforced by a 1980s television advertisement starring Didi Conn. This pronunciation has also led some people to incorrectly believe that the company is French-owned.
