Razzleberry Pie

“Razzleberry pie” was trademarked by Marie Callender’s restaurants, with a “first use” date of 1998. Marie Callender’s razzleberry pie is made with raspberries and blackberries. The name “razzleberry” probably reflects both the words “razzle” and “raspberry.”

“Razzleberry pie” was mentioned, on October 15, 1939, in the newspaper comic “The Captain and the Kids” by Rudolph Dirks. Dirks used “razzleberry” several other times in the comic strip and might have coined the name.

“Razzleberry dressing” was mentioned in televised holiday special, Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol (1962). In 1968, “razzleberry” was mentioned as a color in clothing design. In 1969, “Razzle-Berry” writing paper was sold.

Park Cafe at Glacier National Park in St. Mary, Montana, serves what some consider to be the best razzleberry pies. Some razzleberry pie recipes also contain boysenberry.

Dirks took time off from his Journal work to serve his country in the Spanish-American War and on other occasions. In 1912, he requested a year’s leave to tour Europe with his wife. The request led to a rupture with the Journal. After a lengthy and notorious legal battle, the federal courts ruled that Dirks had the right to continue to draw his characters for a rival newspaper chain but that the Journal retained the right to the title The Katzenjammer Kids. Dirks thereupon began drawing a comic strip titled Hans and Fritz for the World, beginning in 1914. Anti-German sentiment during World War I led to the strip being renamed The Captain and the Kids.

Wikipedia: Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol
Mister Magoo’s Christmas Carol is a musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ famous short story A Christmas Carol. It was the first animated holiday special ever produced specifically for television (1962), and the only one until Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer was first shown in December 1964. It later became the first episode of a TV series entitled The Famous Adventures of Mr. Magoo, in which the Mr. Magoo character became an actor in dramatizations of various well-known stories.

Marie Callender’s Razzleberry Pie
40 oz.
Famous flaky crust. What is the Razzle in our wonderful Razzleberry pie? It’s daring. It’s delightful. It’s downright delicious. It’s the perfect pairing of red, ripe raspberries and sweet, juicy blackberries baking together in our legendary flaky pastry crust. Berry, berry good indeed! Our story begins over 60 years ago, in 1948, when Marie Callender first baked pies for local restaurants. Baking from scratch, Marie used only the finest ingredients and put such love and care into each and every pie that people took notice. Before long, Marie began offering her good home cooking and legendary pies at a restaurant of her own. The word spread and soon Marie Callender restaurants were opened all across the West. We’ve been warming hearts and tummies with our famous recipes ever since. Now you can enjoy the warmth and goodness of Marie’s freshly baked pies at home with our frozen bake and serve pies based on Marie’s original recipes. Enjoy! Proudly made in the USA.
