Remakequel (remake + prequel/sequel)
A “remakequel” is a story that is essentially a remake of another story, although it claims to be a prequel or a sequel to that original story. A “remakequel” can also be a remake of a prequel or a sequel.
“Friday the 13th sequel- prequel- remakequel- reimaginequel that was due out later this year” was cited in print in 2006. “A remake/sequel/remakequel? of Underworld” was cited in 2008. “The rise of the ‘remakequel’: How this one type of movie ruled the box office in 2015” was a story on Business Insider on December 24, 2015.

Remakequel
A portmanteau of Remake and Sequel, in which either a film is remade to retell much the same story, but the events of the original have already occurred (e.g. Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland) or in which a sequel is released which follows the story of the first again (e.g. Evil Dead 2)
“Evil Dead 2 is a remakequel because it starts when the first did, and tells the same story again, it just keeps going”

Still don’t understand if Evil Dead 4 will be a true sequel, a reboot or a remake. Or a “remakequel” akin to Evil Dead 2. My brain hurts.

STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS ROUNDS OUT THE YEAR OF THE REMAKE SEQUEL

Remake sequels are not a new thing, as it used to be that a movie’s first sequel was often a cheap copy with maybe an escalation of stakes. We weren’t so tolerating of that practice, but we allow for it more when it’s a later installment, because of nostalgia and the idea that they’re paying tribute in the form of revival. And it’s a favorable alternative to a total remake or reboot of our beloved franchises, which would be done if not this.

Four of the most gigantic blockbusters in 2015 heavily extracted movie plots and characters that were popular decades ago to create hits that are hard to define — a relatively new, unique, and apparently successful breed in Hollywood.
Some have called them “legacyquels” or “remakequels.” They’re ostensibly sequels, but ones that closely follow the models of their franchises’ origins, and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” already clearly the biggest movie of the year, is a prime example.
