Pop-Up Bar

A “pop-up bar” is a bar that is intended to be temporary, such as one for a concert or for a sporting event (such as the Olympics). “Pop-up bar” has been cited in print since at least 2006.
 
There are other similar “pop-ups.” A “pop-up restaurant” is a temporary restaurant; a “pop-up café” (or “gutter café”) is a small park-like setting on a city street.

For Mr Salt, who runs the Section Eight Container Bar with friends Richard Grills and Craig Donnachie, business is booming, thanks to word of mouth.

But the bar won’t always be there. Mr Salt said part of the appeal of shipping containers was that they were portable.

Meanwhile, the homeless men who frequented the car park still drop by the pop-up bar for a chat.

Pop up bar in Soho

“Earlier this week we checked out a pop-up bar that the Heavenly Social team have set up for four weeks in the old Pop bar at the top of London’s Soho (remember Pop anyone??). The idea behind ‘Everything Must Go’ is to take a deserted bar and run special events including live music.”
 
The beauty of pop up bars is that they offer the chance to test ideas and give a brand energy.

Trend Alert: Pop-Up Bars Are Becoming a Thing

Pop-up restaurants are so 2011. It seems like pop-up cocktail bars are becoming the next thing (and just in time for Mixology Week). The other night we visited a NYC townhouse that was taken over by the brand Cointreau - they tricked out a four story event space and dubbed it La Maison Cointreau, letting members of the public register online for timed entries (which is also a trend).

‘World’s Largest Pop-Up Bar’ Headed for Pier 27

Opening July 4 will be a huge, 12,000-square-foot bar on Pier 27 from local bar vets Eric Rubin (Hog & Rocks, Tres Agaves), Scott Beattie (Cyrus, Hi Lo), and partner Karl Hasz. As the Inside Scoop reports, there will actually be three bars, and a 500-person capacity, and Rubin hopes it will “the place to watch the races.” The project joins the previously announced pop-up restaurant, Waiheke Island Yacht Club, coming to Pier 29 from New Zealand restaurateur Tony Stewart.
 
The races, and the lifespan of the bar, run through September, and the America’s Cup Sports Bar will be open daily starting next month from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and until 11 p.m. on weekends.
