“Pop. 208 Elev. 100 ft.” (Burritoville)
Burritoville is a Mexican food chain that began in 1992 on 78th Street and First Avenue. There is no town of Burritoville, but each Burritoville restuarant declares a population of 208 and an elevation of 100 feet.
14 December 1999, New York Times, pg. B6:
Steve Lynn, a founder of Burritoville, thinks that this is "because Mexican had a bad reputation as too spicy, too greasy, too gassy and too porky."
So, during the 1990's, the growing craze for healthier, fresher Mexican food in California and the Southwest took hold somewhat glacially in the city "because New Yorkers are reluctant to follow West Coast trends," said David LaPointe, Burritoville's chief executive and also a founder. When the first burritoville opened in February 1992, at 78th Street and First Avenue, "people from New York said, 'What's a burrito?'" Mr. LaPointe recalled, "but people who knew about fresh Mexican food from California simply said, 'Thank you for being here.'"
