Plandid (planned + candid)
A “plandid” (planned + candid) is a photograph that appears to be candid, but was actually planned. It shows the subject seemingly in the middle of an activity, and not staring at the camera saying “cheese.” “Plandids” are popular on social media, such as Instagram.
”Plandid When you plan to take a photo that is supposed to appear candid” was posted on the Urban Dictionary on January 29, 2010, but the term wouldn’t be popular until several years later. “Finishing wedding edits. Best man was obsessed with voguing for pseudo candids. I think I coined a term in his honor: plandids. #lexicon” was posted on Twitter by Jennifer H. Smith on September 9, 2011.
“If the word plandid hasn’t been invented, I’m saying I started it. A plandid is a planned candid. Go ahead and give me the Nobel prize” was posted on Twitter by Zak Haines on August 25, 2013. “Plandid: (n) a planned candid—as real as it gets in LA” was posted on Twitter by Rose Locatelli on December 19, 2013.

Plandid
A plandid is a photograph of a person that is taken to look candid, but has been planned. This means the picture is meant to look like it was taken unbeknownst to the person in it. Any girl who is an “instagram model ” will have dozens of these. Examples include hikers walking into the distance, a group of girls all fake laughing at a non-existent joke, etc.

What is a ‘plandid’?
The term combines the words “planned” and “candid.” As the website Man Repeller explains, the plandid is a “carefully calculated solo shot that appears to have been taken by a professional photographer, posted without a hint of shame or irony, and for no apparent reason other than, why not?”
Although it appears talk of the plandid has popped up recently, talk of the planned photo goes back to 2016, with this guide to taking your own plandids.

What Is A Plandid? The Instagram Trend Is Taking Over & Odds Are You’ve Done It Already
By CLAIRE WARNER
Aug 10 2017
Gone are the halcyon days of early Instagram, when every duckface was planned to meticulous perfection. Apparently, a new photographic trend called the “plandid” is sweeping the app, and it’s all about appearing natural — just not too natural, because social media is a judgmental place. Of course, given that this is a basic modeling technique, you’ve probably been doing this all along, so give yourself a pat on the back for being ahead of the curve.
As you may have guessed, plandid is a portmanteau of “planned” and “candid.” According to the Urban Dictionary entry, which dates back to 2010, the contradictory term refers to a picture “meant to look like it was taken unbeknownst to the person in it.” Unlike a posed photo, a plandid is supposed to look as spontaneous as an unwanted pregnancy, but unlike a true candid, a plandid is carefully staged.

A portmanteau of “planned” and “candid,” a plandid, done successfully, should look as though you weren’t aware you were getting your photo taken. A friend (or Instagram husband, or innocent bystander, or a self-timed camera propped on a tripod) just happened to catch you at the right moment, at the right angle, and in the right lighting. It’s like the photographic version of a humble brag.
