Pinstripe Bowl

College football’s first ‘Pinstripe Bowl” was held at the new Yankee Stadium on December 20, 2010, between Syracuse (from the Big East Conference) and Kansas State (from the Big 12 Conference). The name ‘Pinstripe Bowl” was officially announced on March 9, 2010, but records show that trademarks were filed under that name as early as Spetember 30, 2009.

Pinstripes were introduced to the basbeall New York Yankees’ uniforms in 1912. Yankees have been nicknamed “pinstripers” since at least the 1940s.

Wikipedia: Pinstripe Bowl
The Pinstripe Bowl (titled via sponsorship as the New Era Pinstripe Bowl) is a college football bowl game that will be held annually at the new Yankee Stadium in the Bronx section of New York, New York beginning on December 30, 2010.The bowl will pair the fourth-place team from the Big East Conference against the seventh-place team from the Big 12 Conference, with each conference agreeing to a four-year contract that runs through the 2013 season. In the event the Big 12 lacks an eligible team, Notre Dame will receive its invitation. The inaugural game is scheduled for December 30, 2010. ESPN will televise the game and ESPN Radio will carry the game on the radio.

The newly-created bowl was announced by New York Yankees minority owner Hal Steinbrenner, New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg, Big East commissioner John Marinatto, and Big 12 commissioner Dan Beebe at a Yankee Stadium press conference on September 30, 2009.

With the NCAA certification approved in April 2010, the Pinstripe Bowl is the 35th bowl on the calendar and the first in the New York City area since the Garden State Bowl at Giants Stadium in 1981 between Tennessee and Wisconsin and the first in New York City proper since the Gotham Bowl pitted Miami against Nebraska at the original Yankee Stadium in 1962.

The Pinstripe Bowl will become the third bowl game to be played at a stadium built specifically for baseball, joining the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl and the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg. (There have been several other games played at stadiums built for baseball, such as the Insight Bowl and the Seattle Bowl; the Insight Bowl called Phoenix’s Chase Field home for several years and the first playing of the Seattle Bowl was held at Safeco Field.)

Syracuse and Kansas State were chosen to represent the Big East and Big 12 in the inaugural matchup.

Naming and sponsorship
When the game was announced, Bronx Borough president Ruben Diaz Jr. joked, “If you’re looking for suggestions, maybe we should call it the Jeter Bowl.” It was unofficially referred to in the press as the Yankee Bowl, with some advocating the return of the name Gotham Bowl. Finally, on March 9, 2010, the game received its official designation as the Pinstripe Bowl, with the New Era Cap Company signing on as the title sponsor. This also includes the New York Yankees as the first MLB team to sponsor a NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision Bowl game. The logo for the Pinstripe Bowl invokes the frieze that surrounds Yankee Stadium, but does not contain pinstripes.

Syracuse to Play in Pinstripe Bowl
By RICHARD SANDOMIR
Syracuse said on Thursday that it had accepted an invitation to play in the inaugural New Era Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 30 in Yankee Stadium. Its Big 12 opponent is likely to be Kansas State.

“This is a fabulous opportunity for our institution, as many alums live in the area and our fans can descend upon New York City for the holidays,” Dr. Daryl Gross, Syracuse’s athletics director, said in a statement. “We continue to want to represent as New York’s college team as we are the only B.C.S. school in the state of New York and plan to paint the city orange.”

The Pinstripe Bowl was created by the Yankees and the Big East Conference. Of the eligible Big East schools, Syracuse was expected to have the most drawing power for the game.
