Pink Ribbon Bagel
The “Pink Ribbon Bagel” is a trademarked product of the Panera Bread franchise, with a trademark date of September 2001. Panera Bread states that the bagel (in the shape of a ribbon) is made with “cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey and brown sugar.” A portion of the sales of the pink ribbon bagel goes to breast cancer charities.
The Susan G. Komen Foundation is credited with handing out the first pink ribbons to participants in a New York City “Race for the Cure” in 1991.
Wikipedia: Pink ribbon
The pink ribbon is an international symbol of breast cancer awareness. Pink ribbons, and the color pink in general, identify the wearer or promoter with the breast cancer brand and express moral support for women with breast cancer.
Pink ribbons are most commonly seen during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
History
The first known use of a pink ribbon in connection with breast cancer awareness was in the fall of 1991, when the Susan G. Komen Foundation handed out pink ribbons to participants in its New York City race for breast cancer survivors.
The pink ribbon was adopted as the official symbol of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month the next year, in 1992. The pink ribbon was derived from the popular red ribbon for AIDS awareness. Alexandra Penney, the editor-in-chief of the women’s health magazine Self, and breast cancer survivor Evelyn Lauder, the senior corporate vice president at the cosmetics company Estée Lauder created a ribbon for the cosmetics giant to distribute in stores in New York City.

Panera Bread Celebrates 10th Anniversary of Pink Ribbon Bagel(R)
Bagels Available in All Bakery-Cafes Beginning October 1; More Than 7 Million Pink Ribbon Bagels Sold, $1 Million Raised for Breast Cancer Charities Since 2001
ST. LOUIS, MO, Oct 03, 2011 (MARKETWIRE via COMTEX)—Panera Bread is celebrating 10 years of fighting breast cancer by baking bagels. This October, the signature Pink Ribbon Bagel(R) will be sold at all of Panera’s bakery-cafes, with a portion of proceeds from bagels sold going to a variety of breast cancer causes throughout the country. A staple each October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, donations from the sale of the Pink Ribbon Bagel have raised more than $1 million for breast cancer charities. Panera Bread and its franchisees hope to make 2011 the largest year for donations ever.
“The Pink Ribbon Bagel is an iconic Panera offering that allows us to join forces with our customers to support the fight against breast cancer,” said Bill Moreton, Panera’s CEO and President. “Panera Bread is proud to work with the communities we serve to help raise money for such a worthy cause.”
Shaped in the form of the iconic pink ribbon, these bagels feature cherry chips, dried cherries and cranberries, vanilla, honey, and brown sugar, and are baked fresh early each morning by Panera’s bakers at each bakery-cafe. For each bagel sold, a portion of proceeds will be donated to support breast cancer awareness and research. Nearly two million Pink Ribbon Bagels were sold in 2010.
