“People buy from people they like” (business adage)
“People buy from people they like” is a sales axiom; other things being roughly equal (such as price and quality), people make purchases from someone they like. Dale Carnegie’s popular self-help book, How To Win Friends and Influence People (1936), has a section titled “Six Ways to Make People Like You.”
People “buy from people they like” has been cited in print since at least 1920 and “People like to buy from people they like” was used in 1946. The saying was popular in automobile advertisements from the 1950s-1970s and in the software industry in the 1990s.

Some purchasers pay closer attention to quality and price than others do. Some buyers think more of the dollars and cents involved than of the personality of the seller. But there are those who go to the other extreme and buy from people they like, almost regardless of competitor’s values.
So it is plain enough that it is going to pay well to make purchasers like you. To be a friend of a prospective buyer does give you an advantage you cannot aford to discard, even though you do know yours is the best line of goods and the best store in the city.

But he really cornered the tire business by exercising a principal he has long felt to be true. “It’s pretty well known that people buy from people they like. That goes from haircuts to automobiles and there isn’t any amount of high pressure advertising that will ever change it,” he said.

Have we undergone some massive cultural shift when I wasn’t looking? I thought people wanted to know who they’re doing business with. I thought the old sales axiom: “People buy from people they like,” was immutable. All of a sudden people buy from people they don’t know anything about? My head is spinning.
