“Our Lager, which art in barrels, hallowed be thy drink…”

“The Beer Prayer”—a beer version of “The Lord’s Prayer”—has been printed on many images. The beer prayer was posted in newsgroups in October 1997 and opens: “Our lager, Which art in barrels, Hallowed be thy drink.”

Wikipedia: Lord’s Prayer
The Lord’s Prayer (also called the Our Father or Pater Noster, among other names) is a venerated Christian prayer that, according to the New Testament, Jesus taught as the way to pray. Two versions of this prayer are recorded: the long form in the Gospel of Matthew in the middle of the Sermon on the Mount, and the short form in the Gospel of Luke when “one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, as John [the Baptist] taught his disciples.’”

Matthew 6:9-13 (NRSV)
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one.

A prayer

Our lager,
Which art in barrels,
Hallowed be thy drink.
Thy will be drunk, (I will be drunk),
At home as it is in the pub.
Give us this day our foamy head,
And forgive us our spillages,
As we forgive those who spill against us.
And lead us not to incarceration,
But deliver us from hangovers.
For thine is the beer, The bitter, The lager.
Barmen.

Our lager,
Which art in barrels,
Hallowed be thy game.
Thy pints will come,
Thy will be drunk,
At home as it is in the tavern.
Give us this day our foamy head,
And forgive us our spillage’s,
As we forgive those who spill against us.
And lead us not to incarceration,
But deliver us from hangovers.
For thine is the beer, the bitter and the lager,
For ever and ever.

LAD’S PRAYER
Our beer
Which art in barrels
Hallowed be thy drink
Thy will be drunk
I will be drunk
At home as it is in the local
Forgive us this day our daily
spillage
As we forgive those who
spillest against us
And lead us not into the
practice of poncey wine-
tasting
And deliver us from Alco-
pops
For mine is the bitter
The ale and the lager
Forever and ever
BARMEN.

11 November 1999, Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong, New South Wales), “Short Rounds” by Danielle Woolage, pg. 8:
Vicar John Lintern’s prayers for somewhere else to hold his services were answered by publicans at the View Tops and many of the pub regulars were among the congregation. Not usually seen at services they nevertheless recited a revised edition of the Lord’s prayer with gusto:

Our lager,
Which art in barrels,
Hallowed be thy drink.
Thy will be drunk,
(I will be drunk),
At home as in the tavern.
Give us this day our foamy head,
And forgive us our spillages,
As we forgive those who spill against us.
And lead us not to incarceration,
But deliver us from hangovers.
For thine is the beer, the bitter and the lager.
Forever and ever,
Barmen.

Our beer,
Which art in barrels,
Hallowed by thy drink.
From keg or case,
Thy will be drunk,
At home as it is in the pub.

As we forgive those who spill against us.
And lead us not to poncy wine-tastings,
