The Original New York Seltzer Company is the last word in an organization wired into the Yuppie generation. The product is billed as light and without harmful additives, and the founder and president is younger than a baby boomer himself: at 28, David Krenbrink, with a perpetual grin and a bottle of product jammed in his fist, looks more like a teenage idol than a seasoned entrepreneur -- which he is.
The story is not your basic success pattern, but then neither is Krenbrink, a Victoria native with nothing more devastating in his resume than the building of a house for a $30,000 profit, followed by the flipping of a nightclub for a gain of $180,000.
In 1984, languishing in Los Angeles, Krenbrink, via a series of introductions, met Dr. Alan Miller, the grand nephew of the seltzer formula's inventor in up-state New York back around the turn of the century. Mythology has it that, hot and sleepless one night in L.A., Krenbrink groped in his fridge, happened on a bottle of Original New York Seltzer, voiced the equivalent of Eureka! and started sketching out a marketing plan on the kitchen table.
It wasn't actually that simple. Krenbrink was on a combined holiday and a quest for a new business. When he had researched the background of Original New York Seltzer, observed how it would likely appeal to the "light generation" and sampled the product himself, Krenbrink was thoroughly hooked.
But before taking on the ambitious franchise for Canada as well as rights for the U.K., West Germany, India, New Zealand, Australia and Hong Kong, Krenbrink decided to do some sample marketing for himself in Canada and actually brought a truckload of the magic elixir back to Victoria.
One of his first stops was to drop off a case or two to the 7-Eleven organization, asking them for their opinion on the product and his likelihood of success should he buy the franchise. The company's board happened to be in session and to Krenbrink's amazement suggested he go for it. It was at that time that Krenbrink was certain he was on the right track.
Original New York Seltzer comes in six flavors: root beer, vanilla, raspberry, black cherry, lemon lime and orange. It's made with pure B.C. water and fructose (sounds yucky, but it's actually a more natural product than other sugars). It has no coloring to speak of, all flavors looking almost alike, thereby paying its dues to the Yuppie generation, the light, cool gravy train on which Original New York Seltzer is taking its ride.
