“Opportunity does not knock, it presents itself when you beat down the door”

“Opportunity knocks but once” is a proverb that dates, in various forms, to the 1500s. “Opportunity does not knock, it presents itself when you beat down the door” is a variation of the saying that has been printed on many images.

“Opportunity not only knocks at the door of some men, but actually beats down the door, goes in and drags them out of bed” was printed in the Caldwell (ID) Tribune on June 16, 1916. “Opportunity just knocks! It doesn’t beat down the door, learn keypunch” was printed in the Irving (TX) Daily News on August 17, 1971.

“Opportunity does not knock, it presents itself when you beat down the door.—Kyle Chandler” was posted on the newsgroup comp.dcom.sys.cisco on May 19, 1997. Chandler was presumably talking about breaking into the acting profession. Chandler is usually credited for the quotation, but it’s not known when he first said it.
