“One shot—meat in the pot” is a hunting saying. ““Old meat-in-the-pot, here, got her in one shot” was cited in print in a 1924 novel, The Ring-necked Grizzly, by Warren Hastings Miller. “One shot meat in the pot” was cited in print in 2004.
The saying is sometimes continued past “one shot.” “One shot, meat in the pot, two shots maybe not” was cited in print in 2007. “One shot, meat in the pot; two shots, maybe; three shots, seldom” was cited in print in 2008.
