“Once upon a time, all food was organic”

“Once upon a time, all food was organic” is a saying that has been printed on many images.

American author Michael Pollan wrote in The Omnivore’s Dilemma: The Secrets Behind What You Eat (Young Readers Edition) (2009):

“Once upon a time all food was ‘organic.’ It was grown without the help of fossil fuels, pesticides, or chemical fertilizers. As we have seen, that all began to change about fifty years ago, with the growth of the industrial food chain.”

“Once upon a time all food was organic so didn’t need labels. Now we label food as ‘organic’ to separate it from the rest.. #foodforthought” was posted on Twitter by The Farmers Market on March 15, 2013.

Wikipedia: Organic food
Organic food is food produced by methods complying with the standards of organic farming. Standards vary worldwide, but organic farming features practices that cycle resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Organizations regulating organic products may restrict the use of certain pesticides and fertilizers in the farming methods used to produce such products. Organic foods typically are not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents, or synthetic food additives.
