“On Broadway” (1963)
"On Broadway" (1963) was recorded by the Drifters and was a big hit for George Benson. It's from the famed songwriting teams of Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, and Mike Stoller and Jerry Leiber. (Leiber & Stoller also wrote "Spanish Harlem.")
Broadway has been the subject of many songs. "On Broadway" is perhaps the greatest of them that has been written in the past fifty years. The lyrics are, in part:
They say that I won't last too long on Broadway
I'll catch the greyhound bus for home
They all say
They're all wrong
I know they are
'Cause I can play this here guitar
And I won't quit till I'm a star on Broadway
