North of Ordinary (Denton slogan)
“North of Ordinary” is the slogan of the city of Denton. Denton is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex area; perhaps Dallas is “ordinary”?
Wikipedia: Denton, Texas
Denton is a city in the United States and the county seat of Denton County, Texas. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the city population was 80,537, making it the eleventh largest city in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. In July 2006, however, the United States Census Bureau estimated Denton’s population as 109,561. The same estimate names Denton as the nation’s ninth fastest-growing city among those over 100,000 people.
Denton is home to two state universities, the University of North Texas, the largest university in North Texas and the fourth largest in Texas, and Texas Woman’s University, the largest state-supported university for women in the United States.
Both the city and county were named after John B. Denton, a pioneer, preacher, lawyer and Texas Militia Captain. Residents of Denton are known as “Dentonites” and the city has been known as the “Redbud Capital of Texas” since 1993. In 2006, Denton was selected by Money magazine as one of the “Top 100 Best Places to Live in America.”

It’s all about creating an identity.
Unveiling a new slogan, “Denton. North of Ordinary,” the Denton Economic Development Partnership Board hopes to set the city apart from its North Texas neighbors to attract the attention of major corporations.
The idea, officials say, is to develop a theme that captures Denton’s many facets — from its growing and diverse population to its higher education offering to the varied and lively culture within the city. “It ties into North Texas with ‘north’ and ties into the fact that the city of Denton is extraordinary,” said Marty Rivers, branch president with First State Bank in Denton, who is currently serving as board chairman of the Denton Chamber of Commerce.

Many are slogans not as well known across the country but familiar in the state — from Lubbock’s “The Giant Side of Texas,” to Abilene’s “The Friendly Frontier.” Even the city’s neighbors to the south have their own slogans: Fort Worth: “Where the West Begins” and Dallas: “Live Large. Think Big.”

Awards for Denton
The new slogan, “Denton. North of Ordinary,” unveiled just more than a year ago in May 2006 has captured a top award from the Texas Downtown Association.
The announcement of the best marketing program award was made recently at the annual conference held in Fort Worth.

The slogan has had its detractors with some questioning whether the city was claiming superiority over its larger neighbors to the south. City officials, however, say the intent has always been to show others just how special the city is and what it has to offer.
