NoMid (North Midtown)

“NoMid — a k a North Midtown — is Manhattan’s new condo central,” by Zachary Kussin, was a story published in the New York (NY) Post on April 1, 2015. Immediate reaction to the new neighborhood acronym—an April Fools’ joke?—was mostly negative. “NoMid: The New, Terrible, Unnecessary Neighborhood Name” was published in Curbed NY the next day.

The Post story defined the area:

“The stretch of Midtown Manhattan running from 50th to 63rd streets and from Second to Fifth avenues — some call it North Midtown, others Upper Midtown — is once again buzzing with a whole host of new condo projects.”

Others have called this area “East Midtown” or “Midtown East.”

You can call it a comeback.

The stretch of Midtown Manhattan running from 50th to 63rd streets and from Second to Fifth avenues — some call it North Midtown, others Upper Midtown — is once again buzzing with a whole host of new condo projects.

Modal Trigger“It’s been under-utilized for residential development,” appraiser Jonathan Miller says of the area — a crossroads between Midtown and the Upper East Side, which previously saw the rise of residential towers 151 E. 58th St. in 2001, 300 E. 55th St. in 2003 and 310 E. 53rd St. in 2006.

ATTACK OF THE ACRONYMS
NoMid: The New, Terrible, Unnecessary Neighborhood Name
Thursday, April 2, 2015, by Zoe Rosenberg
Oh boy—it got an acronym and a New York Post explainer, meaning certain parts of northern Midtown—er, we mean NoMid—are really on the map now. If the area’s construction boom—with building’s like Aby Rosen and Norman Foster’s 100 East 53rd Street and the above-pictured 301 East 50th Street popping up in the area’s boundaries—hasn’t been enough to warn people of the impending acronym (a la NoMad), a look at the stats shows that the area bounded by 50th and 63rd streets and Second and Fifth avenues was totally asking for it.

@drop ceilings are in: Sutton Place and Beekman Place stop at First ave. The area in question was always considered no man’s land. Perhaps they should continue to call it that. Calling this area Mid-town east always worked for me.

“NoMid” gets renewed attention
Area straddling Midtown and the Upper East Side sees a host of new development

“NoMid,” or North Midtown, is seeing new development activity galore, as land prices in the area haven’t climbed quite as quickly as those in other prime Manhattan neighborhoods.

The neighborhood runs from 50th to 63rd Streets and Second to Fifth Avenues. “It’s been under-utilized for residential development,” Jonathan Miller of real estate appraisal firm Miller Samuel told the New York Post, who also noted the area’s unique location between Midtown and the Upper East Side. “In some ways, it’s been discovered because it straddles both worlds and all of their amenities.”

Just stop, stop now! Or are real estate brokers so stupid that they can’t call neighborhoods by names that are actual words?
