Noflation (no + deflation/inflation)

“Noflation” (no + deflation/inflation) is another term for “zero inflation.” “Inflation or noflation?” was cited in print in 2007. “There appears to be noflation!” was cited on Twitter on March 24, 2009. Later on that same day, Daily Telegraph (UK) writer Henry Wallop asked, “Anyone got a word for zero inflation. zeroflation? any suggestions? Or is there a technical term I don’t know?” One answer was, “how about noflation?”

“Noflation” became popular in 2015, especially in the UK. “Japan joins Britain in ‘noflation’ land” was a Daily Telegraph headline on March 27, 2015.

hmmm No, Japan hasn’t spent 2 decades in a deflation trap

The overall level of debt is still the same as it was in 1990, private debt were transferred to the sovereign, inflation remained quasi null, Japan spent 2 decades in “Noflation” while keeping unemployment at a low level (average 3.88%) despite a quasi null GDP growth rate (0.27%).

Rampant inflation is bad, so no inflation must be good, right? Well, only up to a point and only for a while.

The Lexicon: Noflation
When prices rise, it’s inflation; when the fall, it’s deflation. But what word do economic journalists use when prices are flat? Merely noting that “the rate of inflation is 0 per cent” would be boring so instead we have “noflation”, a coinage that has become more popular in the last couple of months in the UK, where the Office for National Statistics has indeed calculated that the annual rate of change in its consumer price index has slumped to zero – as indeed it has in Japan.
