“No man escapes when freedom fails, the best men rot in filthy jails…”
Hiram Mann. a New York City attorney who died at age 83 in 1955, had these lines published in the Wall Street Journal in 1947:
No man escapes
When freedom fails,
The best men rot in filthy jails;
And they who cried: “Appease, Appease!”
Are hanged by men they tried to please.
The lines have been frequently quoted, especially by libertarians.

Hiram Mann, Attorney, 83, Dies;
Won 27-Year Fight for Navy Men
Goerge Hiram Mann, colorful New York attorney who fought one claim case for twenty-seven years, died yesterday in Roosevelt Hospital after a short illness. His age was 83. He resided at 313 West Fifty-seventh Street.
Mr. Mann’s great battle began in 1908. The self-taught attorney took a case involving overtime payments for 1,400 Navy yard workers. In 1935 the claim was settled when Congress passed a bill authorizing $332,342.72 for the back pay.

An individualist, Hiram Mann (he seldom used his first name George) carried the fight far beyond courtroom walls.

His activities, always good-hearted and well meant, were those of the maverick. He wrote and had printed a poster-size appraisal of the Constitution that he sent to anyone he felt would benefit. He sent letters to newspapers on a wide variety of topics. He mailed privately-printed poems on the subject of “Mother” to those in prison.
