New York Values

Ted Cruz, the U.S. Senator from Texas, and Donald Trump, the New York City developer, had a debate on “New York values” in January 2016, when they were contending for the Republican nomination for U.S. president. In an October 1999 interview with NBC’s Meet the Press, Trump had said that he held New York values that were more liberal than the rest of the country. Cruz brought up Trump’s “New York values” in a radio interview.

Cruz said in the Republican debate on January 14, 2016:

“Everybody understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal and pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage. And focus on money and the media.”

Cruz slams Trump for holding ‘New York values’
By Geoff Earle January 13, 2016 | 4:00pm
WASHINGTON — The truce between Donald Trump and Ted Cruz is over, with the Texas senator slapping the most offensive label he could think of on his GOP rival: New Yorker.

With Cruz holding a narrow three-point lead over Trump in a new Des Moines Register poll in Iowa, the former allies started unloading on each other Tuesday night and into Wednesday with increasingly disparaging attacks.

Cruz told the Howie Carr radio show that Trump should stop playing “Born in the USA” at his rallies — a song that’s an obvious dig at the Canadian-born Texas senator.

“I think he may shift in his new rallies to playing ‘New York, New York’ because Donald comes from New York and he embodies New York values,” Cruz said on the show Tuesday.

Donald Trump fires back in emotional exchange with Ted Cruz over ‘New York values’
Brett LoGiurato and Colin Campbell
January 15, 2016
Real-estate mogul Donald Trump and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) went back and forth during Thursday night’s Republican debate over Cruz’s recent repeated declaration that Trump exhibits “New York values.”

Cruz has suggested voters in Iowa should consider the real-estate mogul’s hometown in recent days, amid the end of a lengthy détente between the two candidates.

Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo asked Cruz to explain what he meant by the term “New York values.” Cruz initially declined to elaborate.

“I think most people know exactly what ‘New York values’ are,” he said.

New Yorkers Quickly Unite Against Cruz After ‘New York Values’ Comment
By MARC SANTORA JAN. 15, 2016
New Yorkers may be proud, ornery individuals, quick to voice their differences loudly and unabashedly.

But on certain issues, New Yorkers almost always unite. The rent being too damn high is certainly one.

And a swipe at the city by Senator Ted Cruz of Texas seems to be another.

At the Republican presidential debate on Thursday, Senator Cruz attacked Donald Trump, one of his rivals for the party’s nomination, by saying darkly that he represented “New York values.”

Asked to define the term, Senator Cruz offered a sweeping generalization for 8.5 million city dwellers.

“Everybody understands that the values in New York City are socially liberal and pro-abortion and pro-gay marriage,” he said. “And focus on money and the media.”

New York Values: The Drive-By Love Affair with Trump Won’t Last
January 15, 2016
(...)
CALLER:  That really stuck in my craw.  I think Cruz was right.  The way… I don’t know the context that he said that in, but to me, New Yorker values… We know that New York is a deep blue state.

RUSH:  It was… Wait, wait, wait.  You don’t know the context.  The context is that Cruz made the statement some days ago attempting to… It was his way of trying to tell people Trump is not a conservative, and it was, you know, talking about all this stuff for Cruz’s birth and his eligibility and Trump leading the fight on that. Cruz retorts—and there might have been one other thing that did come up. But he was referring to Donald’s “New York values.” People said, “Whadda you mean? What are New York values. What do you mean New York values?”

Well, we all know what New York values are, and you heard him say that last night.  Then Trump… You ought to see the Drive-Bys right now.  The Drive-Bys have done a 180. They love Trump! Trump is the best guy.  I mean, every New York liberal journalist I ever heard of has written today glowing, praising Trump.  “He got silent! We saw the real Trump for the first time. We saw that he has a soul. We saw that Trump has a heart. We saw that Trump is a New Yorker, and he just buried Ted Cruz!” That’s the reaction inside the big Apple media.
