“New York point guards will give up their grandmother before their dribble” (basketball adage)

New York City point guards having a reputation for being excellent dribblers in street basketball games, but some observers complain that the point guards seemingly don’t know how to pass the ball. Basketball commentator Fran Fraschilla said in a Twitter message on March 24, 2011:

“Watch MoMo and and think, ‘NYC PG’s will give up their grandmother before they give up their dribble.’”

“Basketball is for those that are willing to give up their gold and their girl before they give up their dribble” was cited on Twitter on June 8, 2012.

Watch MoMo and and think, “NYC PG’s will give up their grandmother before they give up their dribble.” And, why not? Can’t keep out of lane.

There’s a saying in basketball about NYC point guards: “They’ll give up their gold or the girl before giving up their dribble.” Dribbling well – or better yet, having “sick handle” – is about natural ability to make the basketball your personal orange yo-yo. It’s about having a subtle touch, instinctive feel, and…. endless reps.
