“New Orleans—Boosters for the Space Age” (New Orleans slogan)

The city of New Orleans, Louisiana, attempted in 1962 to enhance its role in space exploration, similar to Houston, Texas (called “Space City”) and Huntsville, Alabama (called “Rocket City of the World”). The Times-Picayune and the New Orleans States-Item newspapers joined together in June 1962 to sponsor a “New Orleans in the Space Age Slogan Contest.”
 
The winner, announced in July 16, 1962 newspapers, was “New Orleans—Boosters for the Space Age,” submitted by Mrs. Charles Sebastian of Green Isle. The slogan was short-lived and was not printed in either newspaper after 1963.

Now, “America’s Most Interesting City,” or “The Crescent City,” needs a new one and perhaps your slogan will be the very one, Houston calls itself the “Space City; Huntsville has “Rocket City of the World”; and New Orleans will have the new and catchy slogan that goes… But…you’ll have to write that, so check the rules below and get started on your entry. Mrs. Charles Sebastian’s winning entry is: “New Orleans—Boosters for the Space Age.”
 
The contest was jointly sponsored by The Times-Picayune and The New Orleans States-Item, the Advertising Club of New Orleans, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)-New Orleans Coordinating Committee.

Advertising can come at you in many ways—matchbook covers, on pencils, stationery, sky writing and toothpick jackets. A message you’ll be seeing more of now is: “New Orleans—Boosters for the Space Age.”
 
That is the winning entry in the slogan contest designed to dramatize, in a minimum number of words, the city’s role in space exploration.
 
The entry was submitted by Mrs. Charles Sebastian of Grand Isle. She wins an all expense-paid trip for two to the George C. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. Included is a tour of rocket manufacturing and testing facilities similar to those to operate at Michoud.
