“My mother taught me about the science of osmosis—‘Shut your mouth and eat your supper!’”

“Shut your mouth and eat your supper!” is what a parent might say to a child—although food can’t get in the mouth if it’s shut. “Some of the funniest memories came from pure parent-to-child anger: ‘Shut your mouth and eat…’” was cited in 1977. “If you fall out of that tree and break both legs, don’t come running to me. Be quiet when you’re on the phone. Just shut your mouth and eat” was cited in 1991.

By 2000, the saying was grouped with other jocular “mom” expressions:

“My mama taught me about the science of OSMOSIS—
‘Shut your mouth and eat your supper!’”
