“Morning has broken; Mr. Coffee has spoken”

“Morning has broken; Mr. Coffee has spoken” is a saying that has appeared on posters. “Morning Has Broken” is a classic song that was popularized by Cat Stevens in 1971. The song ‘Mr. Coffee” appeared on the album Duh (1992) from the punk rock band Lagwagon. Mr. Coffee’s opening lyrics are “Morning has broken, Mr. Coffee has spoken.” Mr. Coffee is the name of a trademarked coffee machine, but the lyrics seem to simply imply that it’s morning and that someone has just had coffee.

The poster was designed in 2011 by Swedish artist Simon Ålander of the blog Coffee Made Me Do It.

Wikipedia: Morning Has Broken
“Morning Has Broken” is a popular and well-known Christian hymn first published in 1931. It has words by English author Eleanor Farjeon and is set to a traditional Gaelic tune known as “Bunessan” (it shares this tune with the 19th century Christmas Carol “Child in the Manger”). It is often sung in children’s services. English pop musician and folk singer Cat Stevens included a version on his 1971 album Teaser and the Firecat. The song became identified with Stevens when it reached number six on the US pop chart and number one on the US easy listening chart in 1972.

My theme song. Really, I mutter it to myself every morning as I walk like a zombie into the kitchen, reaching for the coffee.

Simon Ålander is a Digital Media student at Hyper Island in Stockholm, Sweden. Hyper Island is basically the future of creative education and anyone who attends, will most likely have their choice of opportunities after graduation. Simon emailed me a few months ago with a typography question and recently sent me this—a coffee inspired poster he designed—leading me to believe there’s nothing new I could actually tell him about typography. Incredible work.

I also love his website name, Coffee Made Me Do It.
