Money Making Manhattan (Money Makin’ Manhattan)

“Money Making Manhattan” or Money Makin’ Manhattan” (or just “Money Makin’” or “Money-Makin’”) has been a rap nickname for Manhattan (or just Harlem) since the early 1980s. John “Mr. Magic” Rivas (1956-2009), a hip hop radio DJ, probably coined the term.

The Beastie Boys, a hip hop trio, used “Money Makin’” in the lyrics to “Root Down” (1995) and “money makin Manhattan” in the lyrics to “Super Disco Breakin’” (1998).

“Money Earnin’ Mount Vernon” is a similar rap nickname.

Wikipedia: Manhattan
Manhattan is the oldest and the most densely-populated of the five boroughs of New York City. Located primarily on Manhattan Island at the mouth of the Hudson River, the boundaries of the borough are identical to those of New York County, an original county of the state of New York. The borough and county consist of Manhattan Island and several small adjacent islands: Roosevelt Island, Randall’s Island, Wards Island, Governors Island, Liberty Island, part of Ellis Island, Mill Rock, and U Thant Island; as well as Marble Hill, a small section on the mainland adjacent to the Bronx. The original city of New York began at the southern end of Manhattan, expanded northwards and then, between 1874 and 1898, incorporated land from surrounding counties.

A Harlem party-giver who called himself Mr. Magic bought time on WHBI, a barter station filled with ethnic broadcasting near WBLS on the dial. He aired a rap showafter 2AM on Friday and Saturday nights. Magic’s broadcast were a throwback to the days of personality jocks, with the program’s brash host hyping shows he was emceeing, taking requests, and flooding the airwaves with stock phrases his listeners loved (“Money Making Manhattan” was a favorite).

With young male children, who are most young children, these impoverished Third World youngsters will, I’m told, have a greater chance of reaching their majority than the male six-year old kids in the far richer neighborhood of Harlem, just six miles uptown from my own truly rich neighborhood in downtown “money-makin’ Manhattan.”
